HOT EDDY’S DROOMLAND XXL

De Roode Bioscoop sits on Haarlemmerplein in Amsterdam and has been part of the city's cultural life since 1913, when it opened as a local cinema. More than a century later, the single hall building has been transformed into a music theatre, though it carries its original character intact. The hall seats just 70 people, which means the distance between the audience and the performers is almost nonexistent. That physical closeness is not incidental but central to what the venue sets out to do. The programming cuts across genres without settling into any single one. Concerts range from jazz and world music to classical performances, musical theatre and chansons, and poetry readings feature regularly alongside the music. The acoustic program is designed without amplification in mind, and the space is said to suit that approach well. In a nod to its origins, the venue has also resumed showing films, presenting documentaries in the company of their directors, followed by a discussion and dinner, turning a screening into something closer to a shared event than a passive viewing. What distinguishes De Roode Bioscoop from most Amsterdam stages is its explicit focus on artistic process rather than polished presentation. The venue gives both emerging and established artists the room to try out new concepts, sometimes performing them in front of a live audience for the very first time. The intimacy of 70 seats makes that kind of experimentation possible in a way that larger halls simply cannot replicate. For listeners who want to be genuinely close to the making of something, rather than watching the finished product from a distance, this venue on Haarlemmerplein occupies a particular place in the Amsterdam concert landscape.
