JUST LIKE ELTON

Toon Hermans Theater sits in the heart of Sittard and serves as the principal theatre for the Sittard and Geleen region. It operated for many years under the name Schouwburg De Domijnen before being renamed in honour of Toon Hermans, the much loved Dutch cabaret artist who was born in Sittard. That renaming gives the building a local significance that goes beyond architecture or programming: Hermans is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Dutch cabaret history, and the theatre carries that legacy as part of its identity. The main hall accommodates around 760 guests and is noted for its good acoustics, which suit the range of performances the venue regularly presents. The programming is deliberately broad. Theatre productions, music concerts, cabaret evenings and family shows all appear on the schedule, making it a general purpose civic theatre rather than a specialist music hall. That versatility reflects its role as the primary cultural venue for a mid size urban region in the province of Limburg, where a single theatre needs to serve audiences with quite different tastes. The building is managed under the PLT umbrella, which also oversees Theater Heerlen and Theater Kerkrade, grouping the main stages of the South Limburg theatre circuit into one organisation. The location on Monseigneur Claessensstraat places the theatre centrally within Sittard, and the building offers modern facilities alongside the warm atmosphere that sources consistently associate with it. For visitors coming specifically for music, the programme includes a steady strand of concerts alongside its theatre and cabaret offerings, all within a compact, well proportioned hall that keeps audiences close to the stage.
