Lichtbende speelt Niemandsland

The Orgelpark occupies the restored Parkkerk, an Art Deco Protestant church on Gerard Brandtstraat in Amsterdam West, close to the Vondelpark. The building was erected between 1908 and 1911, served as a place of worship for nearly a century, and was deconsecrated in the early 2000s. The Utopa foundation subsequently undertook a careful restoration and reopened it in 2013 as a dedicated concert hall. The conversion was guided by a deliberate inversion of the traditional church model: where once the organ served the building and its liturgy, here the building serves the organ and its music. The result is an intimate hall with clear, praised acoustics, impressive organs as its visual and sonic centrepiece, and a foyer that retains the warm character of the original structure. Programming at the Orgelpark is broad enough to challenge any assumption that an organ venue means only sacred or classical repertoire. Each season brings roughly 80 concerts and events spanning classical music, jazz, and free improvisation, as well as productions that pair the organ with dance, film, and other performing arts. The venue regularly commissions new compositions, giving living composers a platform to expand what the instrument can do in a contemporary context. Master classes and symposia also form part of the calendar, and conservatory students from the Netherlands and further afield periodically use the space as a workshop setting. What distinguishes the Orgelpark from larger Amsterdam concert halls is its focused, almost curatorial identity. It is not a multipurpose venue that happens to own a pipe organ; the organ is genuinely the organising principle around which everything else is arranged. That clarity of purpose, combined with the Art Deco surroundings and the small scale of the hall, gives concerts here a concentrated atmosphere that is difficult to find elsewhere in the city.
