The Chassé Theater sits in the centre of Breda, next to the old Kloosterkazerne, and takes its name from the Dutch military officer David Hendrik Chassé. The building, designed by architect Herman Hertzberger and completed in 1995, is immediately recognizable for its sweeping, undulating roof, which sets it apart from conventional theater architecture. It replaced an earlier municipal venue, the Stadsschouwburg Concordia, and grew into the largest combined film and live performance theater in the south of the Netherlands. The complex contains three theater halls, three cinema screens and three restaurants, and draws around 400,000 visitors per year. As a concert venue, the Chassé operates squarely in the territory of established Dutch and international artists rather than emerging or underground acts. Its programming over the years has included Boudewijn de Groot, Limburg folk rock band Rowwen Hèze, singer Kovács and tribute productions such as the Pink Floyd Project, giving a sense of its range across singer songwriter, world music and rock. Alongside these music events the theater runs a full calendar of theater, dance, musical theater and film, with the foyer functioning as an open meeting and work space on weekdays as well. What distinguishes the Chassé from a dedicated pop venue is precisely this breadth. The three halls allow different scales of production to run simultaneously, and the cinema component means the building is in daily use across a wide range of formats. Guided backstage tours, available in English for groups, offer visitors a look at technical infrastructure including the fly tower, pointing to a building that takes its architecture and stagecraft seriously alongside its role as a regional cultural anchor.
