Villa Rosie

Verhalenhuis Haarlem is a small cultural venue in the Haarlem Noord district, at Van Egmondstraat 7. It occupies a former pastor's residence, and that origin shapes the whole experience: this is a house rather than a purpose built hall, with rooms that the sources describe as having exceptional acoustics. The name translates roughly as House of Stories, and the programming reflects that idea, mixing music, theatre and spoken or discussion based evenings under one roof. The calendar leans toward the intimate end of live performance. Acoustic concerts and jazz are regular fixtures, and one recurring jazz series has centred on soul repertoire, including a night built around the music of Marvin Gaye. Alongside the concerts, the house stages theatrical plays and runs philosophy cafés, where the focus is on conversation instead of a stage show. Singer songwriters and small ensembles fit the setting well, since the rooms suit quieter, detailed sound rather than loud amplified sets. The room is set up mainly with seating, so most events are listening occasions where the audience sits close to the performers. That arrangement, together with the domestic scale of the building, gives the venue a low key, community minded character. It draws a mixed audience, from younger visitors to older regulars, and the stated idea behind it is that stories, whether sung, acted or talked through, are worth returning to. The sources say little about the building's earlier history beyond its past as the pastor's house, so its appeal rests mostly on its setting, its acoustics and the variety of what it programs in a residential part of Haarlem.
