Few acts did more to shape the sound of British electronic music than 808 State, the Manchester outfit who started out in 1987 behind the counter of Eastern Bloc Records and ended up influencing a generation of techno, IDM and ambient artists. Their debut Newbuild, knocked together over a single weekend in January 1988, is credited as a foundational acid house record, and Aphex Twin was such a devotee he later released it on his Rephlex label. The breakthrough came with "Pacific State", which spent 11 weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number 10. From there the group moved into bolder territory: ex:el in 1991 brought in Bernard Sumner and Björk as vocalists and delivered three more UK top ten singles. Later albums pulled in collaborators as varied as James Dean Bradfield, Mike Doughty and Guy Garvey from Elbow, while their remix credits include David Bowie and Soundgarden. AllMusic summed it up as one of the most important dance music acts of all time, which feels about right.
