About
Finnish harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen took second prize at the prestigious Bruges International Harpsichord Competition back in 1998, and has since built a reputation as one of the most versatile early music specialists around. He performs across Europe as a soloist, works as a chamber musician alongside names like Reinhard Goebel and Riccardo Minasi, and serves as artistic director of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra. On the conducting side, he has led productions including Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea for the Finnish National Opera and Handel's Acis and Galatea for the Finnish Chamber Opera. Häkkinen's recorded output spans composers from Bach and Rameau to Frescobaldi and Byrd, with releases on labels including Naxos, Ondine, and Avie. He also performs on organ and clavichord, not just harpsichord, which gives his programming a broader range than most specialists manage. He teaches at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and runs master classes internationally, keeping one foot firmly in the next generation of early music players.
