About
Ab Baars is a Dutch saxophonist and clarinetist whose work sits at the restless intersection of free jazz and free improvisation, shaped by decades of playing in some of the most adventurous corners of the Dutch and international scene. Since joining the ICP Orchestra in 1986 and performing as a guest with punk outfit The Ex from 1989 onward, he has built a reputation as someone who moves between wildly different musical contexts without missing a beat. His 1997 album A Free Step was a tribute to his clarinet teacher John Carter, gathering Carter's previously unrecorded compositions after the latter's death in 1991. His trio with bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven has been a core vehicle since 1990, occasionally expanding to include trombonist Roswell Rudd. Over the years he has shared stages and recordings with the likes of Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Sonic Youth.
