Juan de Marcos González built the Afro Cuban All Stars as a vehicle for pretty much every style Cuban music has to offer: bolero, son montuno, timba, danzón, rumba, chachachá and more, all wrapped into a big band format featuring some of the finest veteran musicians Havana had to offer. Their debut album A Toda Cuba le Gusta came out of the legendary 1996 EGREM Studios sessions that also produced the Buena Vista Social Club record, and it brought together heavyweights like Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Orlando Cachaíto López and Félix Baloy, most of them carrying careers stretching back to the 1950s Havana scene. Ry Cooder even showed up to play slide guitar on the track Alto Songo. When Wim Wenders released his Buena Vista Social Club documentary in 1998, the whole Cuban crew became a global phenomenon, and the All Stars have kept the music alive ever since, with live recordings documenting their ongoing performances across the world.
