About
Agriculture call what they do 'ecstatic black metal,' and that label earns its keep. The Los Angeles four piece, built around vocalist and bassist Leah Levinson, drummer Kern Haug, and guitarists Richard Chowenhill and Dan Meyer, pulls from Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Zen Buddhism as much as from any metal tradition. Marko Djurdjić of Exclaim! put it well: the music trembles with optimism even when rooted in adversity, awash in noise but somehow purifying. They started self releasing on their own terms with the 2022 EP The Circle Chant before signing to The Flenser in 2023, which brought their debut album Agriculture and the 2024 EP Living Is Easy. Their second full length, The Spiritual Sound, arrived in 2025. The gear nerd detail that says a lot about the band: Meyer plays a custom guitar fitted with Thunderbird bass pickups, while Chowenhill runs overwound pickups to fill out the sonic spectrum together. It is that kind of deliberate, textured thinking that sets them apart.
