Winning the Operalia competition in 2013 put Aida Garifullina on the map fast. The Russian lyric soprano of Tatar descent had already been turning heads with her work at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, but that prize opened doors to stages across Europe and beyond. She became an ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera from the 2014/2015 season, and her recording contract with Decca Records followed in 2015. Her 2017 self titled debut album on Decca features 15 arias recorded with the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra under Cornelius Meister, showing off the range that has made her one of the more exciting lyric sopranos working today. She has shared stages with José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Dmitry Hvorostovsky, and performed at the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Moscow alongside Robbie Williams, singing a duet of "Angels". She also appeared in the 2016 film Florence Foster Jenkins, portraying soprano star Lily Pons.
