About
Also known as: Andrew Jackson Jihad
AJJ have been one of folk punk's most reliably sharp acts since forming in Phoenix in 2004 under the name Andrew Jackson Jihad. Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty are the two constants at the core, and their lyrics chew through topics like poverty, religion, addiction, and existentialism with a sardonic wit that keeps things feeling honest rather than preachy. They officially shortened their name to AJJ in 2016, partly out of respect and partly because, as Bonnette put it, their fascination with Andrew Jackson had simply grown stale. Over nine studio albums they have covered a lot of sonic ground, from rough acoustic folk punk to fuller band arrangements complete with cello. Their 2020 record Good Luck Everybody came out on their own label, AJJ unlimited LTD, and leaned into politically charged territory with songs like "Mega Guillotine 2020" and "Loudmouth". Their 2023 album Disposable Everything marked a new chapter with Hopeless Records and welcomed drummer Kevin Higuchi as a full time member.
