Rooted in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Akae Beka grew out of the long running roots reggae outfit Midnite when a shift in membership in 2015 prompted a fresh start under a new name. The name itself comes from the Book of Enoch, chapter 68, and was chosen by the group's central figure Vaughn Benjamin, whose lyrical depth and spiritual grounding defined the band's sound. Their debut performance landed in Denver in July 2015, and from there the releases came steadily, including collaborations with respected labels like I Grade and Zion I Kings. Benjamin passed away in November 2019, and the band held a final tribute show in San Diego in February 2020. Even after his death, the music kept surfacing. The posthumous album Protocols arrived in 2020, and releases have continued well into the mid 2020s, with titles like Living Testament and The Akae Beka Scrolls showing just how much material Benjamin left behind.
