About

Also known as: Akiko Suvanayi, Akiko Suwanai, Suwanai Akiko, 諏訪内 晶子

Winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition at just 18 made Akiko Suwanai the youngest ever champion of that prestigious contest, and it set the tone for a career built on serious, high level classical violin playing. The Tokyo born violinist had already picked up second prize at both the Paganini Competition and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in the years just before, so by the time the 1990s arrived she was firmly on the international stage. Her discography covers a broad sweep of the repertoire, from Dvořák and Sibelius with major orchestras to solo Bach, and she has worked with conductors like Vladimir Ashkenazy, Charles Dutoit and Iván Fischer. For years she performed on the legendary 1714 Dolphin Stradivarius, on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation, and after returning it she took up a Guarneri del Gesù known as the "Charles Reade", on loan from collector Ryuji Ueno.
