About
Also known as: アラン・ロンバール
Alain Lombard is a French conductor whose career spans some of the most prestigious orchestras and opera houses in the world. He won the gold medal at the Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition in 1966, then made his Metropolitan Opera debut the following year conducting Gounod's Faust. He also worked as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, traveling with the orchestra as Associate Tour Conductor. Back in France, Lombard was central to building the Opéra du Rhin from 1972 onward, serving as its music director through 1980 and leading commercial recordings of Faust, Turandot and Così fan tutte. He ran the Strasbourg Philharmonic for over a decade and later directed the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. His discography also includes Carmen with Régine Crespin and Lakmé with Mady Mesplé, recordings that remain touchstones for French operatic repertoire.
