About

Also known as: A. Scarlatti, Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), Allessandro Scarlatti, Scarlatti

Nicknamed 'the Italian Orpheus' by his contemporaries, Alessandro Scarlatti spent his career moving between Naples and Rome, shaping the sound of Italian Baroque opera more than almost anyone else. He is credited with designing the definitive form of the da capo aria, inventing the Italian overture in three movements (a direct ancestor of the symphony), and pioneering the four part sonata that foreshadowed the string quartet. Handel was among those deeply shaped by his theatrical music, and the two met almost daily around 1708. Scarlatti was equally at home writing cantatas, oratorios, masses and concertos, but opera was his great arena. Mitridate Eupatore is widely regarded as his masterpiece, and his later Roman productions including Telemaco and La Griselda rank among his finest stage works. His Messa di Santa Cecilia for chorus and orchestra, written for Cardinal Acquaviva in 1721, stands as one of his most celebrated contributions to sacred music.
