Russian trumpeter and flugelhorn player Alex Sipiagin arrived in the US in 1990 and hit the ground running, landing his first major gig with the Gil Evans Band before going on to play alongside heavyweights like Dave Holland, the Mingus Big Band, and Michael Brecker. Over the following decades he built up a prolific recording career as a leader, releasing twelve albums on Criss Cross Jazz alone, a label that became something of a home base for him. His sound sits squarely in the hard bop and post bop tradition, detailed and assured without ever feeling academic. Sipiagin is also a founding member of Opus 5, a tight quintet with Seamus Blake, David Kikoski, Boris Kozlov, and Donald Edwards. The group has put out several records of its own, all on Criss Cross. On the side he teaches at New York University Steinhardt, and his output as a leader shows no signs of slowing, with releases continuing well into the 2020s.
