About
Also known as: Oleksandr Havrylyuk
Alexander Gavrylyuk is a Ukrainian born Australian pianist whose competition record alone sets him apart: Gold Medals at the Horowitz International Piano Competition in 1999, the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in 2000, and the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition in 2005. He has performed at Wigmore Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, and with ensembles ranging from the New York Philharmonic to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. His recorded output leans heavily toward the Russian repertoire he clearly loves. He tracked all five Prokofiev concertos with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy, and in 2013 and 2014 he played complete cycles of all four Rachmaninov concertos plus the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with two different orchestras. His 2017 Proms performance of Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra drew strong praise.
