About

Allez Allez started life as something else entirely. In 1981 the Belgian funk and new wave band Marine lost their singer while in London to record a Peel session, so they grabbed Sarah Osborne of Repetition, did the session anyway and renamed themselves. It worked out. Local hits followed, including "She's Stirring Up" and "African Queen", a tribute to Grace Jones, and the mini album African Queen went gold and got them onto the Torhout Werchter festival bill in 1982. Virgin signed them and released the glossier pop album Promises that same year, but Osborne left soon after and American singer Jackie Irwin stepped in. Bigger success never quite arrived, and the band split in 1985. Bassist Marka went on to a name in French music circles, and he is the father of Angèle and Roméo Elvis. The group reunited for a run of shows in 2017 with a new line up, and Marka also wrote a book of memoirs about the band.
