About
Founded by Syrian clarinettist and composer Ghaeth Almaghoot, the Almaghoot Quintet is built around cross cultural dialogue and the art of storytelling. Their debut album Levantine Hues draws on interviews and Almaghoot's own memories to explore themes of longing and belonging, weaving Arabic microtonal music into compositions scored for bass clarinet, an ambitious move that fuses centuries old traditions with a contemporary sensibility. The quintet brings together five musicians from across Europe and the Middle East: Almaghoot himself on clarinets and duduk, Yanna Pelser on viola, Ties Semey on guitar, Johannes Fend on double bass, and Erik Larrea on percussion. Their sound sits at the intersection of Arabic and Middle Eastern melody and jazz harmony, producing genre spanning work that feels both deeply rooted and genuinely exploratory.
