About

Alondra de la Parra is the kind of conductor who makes classical music feel genuinely alive. Born in New York to Mexican parents and raised in Mexico City, she moves fluidly between the orchestral world and Mexican musical tradition, and that blend defines everything she does. In 2003 she founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, a 65 piece ensemble built specifically around Mexican and Latin American repertoire, and with them she recorded two albums: Mi Alma Mexicana and Travieso Carmesí. The bolero and folk material on those records, including tracks like Júrame and Cielito Lindo, show how seriously she takes that side of her identity. She made history with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, becoming its first music director and its first female principal conductor when she took the post in 2017. She has also won a Sports Emmy for her orchestral work on ESPN's coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics, which tells you something about her range. Since 2024 she leads the Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid.
