Under the name Alva Noto, Carsten Nicolai has built one of the most distinctive identities in experimental electronic music, fusing glitch, minimalism, ambient and drone into a body of work that sits right at the intersection of sound and visual art. His music reflects a reductive precision, pulling meaning from mathematical patterns, acoustic phenomena and signal structures rather than conventional melody or rhythm. That approach has landed him at the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou and the Venice Biennale, among many others. His collaborative reach is genuinely impressive. He co scored Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant alongside Ryūichi Sakamoto, earning nominations for a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Grammy. He has worked with Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld, Michael Nyman and Ryōji Ikeda, and in 2018 handled the sound design for Iñárritu's VR project Carne y Arena. He also co founded the label Raster Noton, a key platform for European experimental electronic music, and now releases through his own NOTON label.
