American Football built their reputation on a single self titled album released in 1999, a quiet, intricate record that combined emo with math rock time signatures and unconventional guitar tunings. The Urbana, Illinois band barely lasted three years in their original run, but that debut took on a life of its own, turning the house photographed on its cover into a genuine pilgrimage spot for emo fans worldwide. Guitarist and vocalist Mike Kinsella, guitarist Steve Holmes, and drummer and trumpet player Steve Lamos created something so specific and atmospheric that it lingered in people's ears long after the band called it quits. When they reformed in 2014, bringing Kinsella's cousin Nate Kinsella in on bass, American Football picked up almost exactly where they left off. Three more albums followed, each one self titled, each released through Polyvinyl Records. Their 2019 record featured a collaboration with Hayley Williams of Paramore, the first time they had ever brought in a featured vocalist. They even bought the iconic house from their album cover in 2023 to save it from demolition.
