About

Ananta Quartet sets out to prove that Indian classical music and Western chamber music can sit comfortably in the same room. The group pairs violin and piano with Indian violin and tabla, so both traditions are represented on stage. The idea isn't to dwell on the differences but to move the two worlds closer together, and the result is a blend that draws on the best of both. The band grew out of two existing duos. Emmy Storms and Cynthia Liem played together as Magma Duo, while Lenneke van Staalen and Heiko Dijker explored Indian music on Indian violin and tabla. They joined forces for a concert at the Grachtenfestival in 2019, a performance that helped earn Storms the festival's prize, and the chemistry was strong enough to keep going. The name Ananta means the eternal, the infinite. Their appeal comes down to infectious enjoyment and an intense way of playing right where two cultures meet.
