About
Ancient Rites started out in Flanders in 1988 and survived some genuinely harrowing early years: founding guitarist Philip died in a car crash, and drummer Stefan took his own life shortly after. The band pushed through, rebuilt its lineup, and grew from a raw black metal act into something harder to pin down, adding keyboards, a third guitarist, and a taste for historical and mythological themes alongside the brutality. Vocalist Gunther Theys has been the one constant thread through it all. Over a career spanning more than three decades, they have shared stages with an astonishing range of heavy acts, from Slayer and Metallica to Judas Priest, Morbid Angel, and Motörhead. Their discography runs from the debut The Diabolic Serenades through to Laguz in 2015, with each record reflecting a band that kept evolving rather than standing still. The lineup has shifted constantly, but the core identity, that mix of ferocity and melodic depth, has stayed put.
