About
Andrew Brown spent the better part of two decades as one of the reliable engines inside Cab Calloway's orchestra, and he did it on an unusually wide set of horns: clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax and the big, rumbling bass saxophone. He joined the Cotton Club house band in Harlem in 1925, a group that grew into the Missourians under bandleader Andrew Preer before Calloway took the reins by the end of the decade. Brown stayed with Calloway until 1945, which means he is all over the band's recording sessions and was along for its 1934 tour of Europe. He also turned up on screen with the band in Hi De Ho, Blues in the Night and Minnie the Moocher. Before all that he had worked with P.B. Langford and Wilson Robinson in the early 1920s. When the touring years ended, he ran a music education studio in New York in the late 1940s.
