About
Also known as: Andrew Charles Cyrille, アンドリュー・シリル
One of the most distinctive voices in free jazz drumming, Andrew Cyrille has spent decades carving out a style that AllMusic's Chris Kelsey described as playing with grace and authority that few free jazz drummers come close to matching. Brooklyn born, he first made his mark as part of the Cecil Taylor unit, a stint that lasted around 15 years and helped define what avant garde percussion could sound like. That association alone would be a career, but Cyrille kept going. His discography as a leader stretches from the late 1960s through to the 2020s, with stops at labels like Black Saint, Soul Note, and ECM. He recorded drum duets with Milford Graves, collaborated with Peter Brötzmann, Irène Schweizer, and Anthony Braxton, and spent years as part of Trio 3 alongside Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman. More recently he has put out records with guitarist Bill Frisell and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, showing no signs of slowing down.
