Ani DiFranco built something genuinely rare in music: a completely independent career, releasing more than 20 albums entirely on Righteous Babe Records, the label she founded herself at 19. Her sound pulls from folk, punk, funk, hip hop, and jazz, though she's best known for sharp, confessional songwriting with an acoustic guitar at its center. The live double album Living in Clip from 1997 captured the raw energy she'd built touring relentlessly through the 1990s, and her cover of 'Wishin' and Hopin'' under the opening credits of My Best Friend's Wedding gave her a wider pop culture moment without softening her edges. Beyond the records, DiFranco has long been a vocal activist, using benefit concerts, her Righteous Babe Foundation, and spoken word work to support causes from abortion rights to LGBTQ visibility. Pete Seeger was among her mentors, and that lineage shows in her commitment to protest and labor songs. In 2024 she made her Broadway debut in Hadestown as Persephone, a role she had originally played on the concept album that sparked the whole show.
