About
Anne La Berge plays flute the way most people don't even imagine a flute can be played. Based in Amsterdam since 1989, she builds performances out of quarter tone flutes, live electronics, spoken text, and real time computer processing, giving performers genuine agency over how a piece unfolds rather than simply following a score. Her work is openly political and poetic in equal measure, and many of her compositions use flexible structures where musicians make live choices, respond to cues, and shape the music together in the moment. She co founded the Amsterdam improvisation series Kraakgeluiden in 1999, which ran until 2006 and left a lasting mark on the Dutch experimental scene. She is also a founding artist at Splendor Amsterdam, a musician run collective that turned a former bathhouse into a creative hub. Her recordings span dozens of labels and feature collaborators ranging from Ig Henneman and Jaimie Branch to Ensemble Modern, and her most recent releases appeared in 2025 on Splendor Records and Bandcamp.
