About

Also known as: ASM, Ann-Sophie Mutter

One of the most commanding violinists of the last half century, Anne Sophie Mutter made her orchestral debut with the Berlin Philharmonic at just 13, championed by Herbert von Karajan after he heard her at the Lucerne Festival. That early momentum never let up: she went on to record more than 50 albums, mostly on Deutsche Grammophon, picking up four Grammy Awards along the way, and has performed as a soloist with virtually every major orchestra on the planet. What sets Mutter apart from her peers is a genuine commitment to contemporary music. She has had works written specifically for her by composers including Thomas Adès, Sofia Gubaidulina, John Williams, Max Richter, and Henri Dutilleux, among others. Her repertoire stretches from Baroque classics to brand new commissions, and her longtime recital partnership with pianist Lambert Orkis has produced some of her most celebrated recordings. She also runs the Anne Sophie Mutter Foundation, which supports young string musicians.
