About

Also known as: أنور ابراهم

Anouar Brahem has spent decades doing something genuinely rare: making the oud feel completely at home in a jazz context while keeping its roots in Arabic classical and folk music firmly intact. The Tunisian composer and player signed with ECM Records and built a catalogue of albums that blend those worlds with uncommon subtlety, including Thimar alongside saxophonist John Surman and bassist Dave Holland, and Blue Maqams from 2017, which brought together Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, and Django Bates. Along with Rabih Abou Khalil and Dhafer Youssef, he played a real part in establishing the oud as a serious voice in world fusion and ethno jazz. His live work has been just as striking. He composed for Tunisian cinema and theatre early in his career, and a live performance of "Halfaouine" in Carthage shows how deep that connection to place runs. More recently, an official music video for "After the Last Sky" dropped in early 2025, and a live recording from the Philharmonie de Paris followed later that year.
