Oslo's Arcturus have spent over three decades bending metal into something far stranger than most bands dare attempt. Formed in 1991, they pull from black metal, classical composition, and industrial textures, wrapping it all in what one critic memorably called "flamboyant" costumes and an acquired taste in sound. Their early album Aspera Hiems Symfonia was hailed as one of the best metal releases of all time, while La Masquerade Infernale swapped growls for semi operatic singing and threw in jungle beats and industrial noise for good measure. The band has shared members with Mayhem, Ulver, and Dimmu Borgir, earning them a legitimate supergroup reputation. After disbanding in 2007 and a drawn out reunion process, they returned and eventually released Arcturian in 2015 on Prophecy Productions, their first album in over a decade. Tracks like "The Chaos Path" and "Fall of Man" show the band still operating in their own cosmic lane, uninterested in fitting neatly into any one genre.
