About
Arielle Vernède is a Dutch concert pianist from Bloemendaal whose programmes have a distinctive dramatic quality, unfolding like a narrative with a clear musical argument. She builds her sets around a thoughtful balance of familiar repertoire and lesser known works, and her playing draws on a vivid tonal palette alongside genuine virtuosity. She was part of the original quartet that performed Simeon ten Holt's Canto Ostinato in the early 1980s, alongside pianists Gerard Bouwhuis, Gene Carle and Kees van Zeeland. That group gave the piece its breakthrough moment at the Holland Festival in 1985. Because Ten Holt's score functions more as a sketch than a strict prescription, leaving performers free to shape accents, choose sections and handle repetitions as they see fit, Vernède's long involvement with the work gives her a particular authority over it. Chopin also features among her preferred composers.
