About
Arifa, formerly known as Afro Anatolian Tales, is the project of Turkish Dutch percussionist Sjahin During, built around the idea that ethnic rhythms, electronic layering and improvisation can form a shared musical language. The instrumentation tells you a lot: Afro Anatolian percussion, tanbur, cello and trumpet are woven together with electronic textures to create something cinematic and hypnotic. The music draws on sounds from the old Silk Road and runs them through contemporary composition and digital sound design. The group has taken that sound to stages across 32 countries on five continents, including TivoliVredenburg, the Barbican in London, Havana Jazz in Cuba, the Jarasum Jazz Festival in Korea and Jazz à Vienne in France. Five albums in, each one recognised as best world music album in the Netherlands by MixedWorldMusic.
