Polly Louise Mackey, who records as Art School Girlfriend, grew up in Wrexham and has built a sound that layers hazy electronics over pop instincts sharp enough to cut through. Her debut album, Is It Light Where You Are, was written in a feverish two week burst after a breakup, mostly in a small corridor like studio, with Mackey driving to the Hampstead ponds at dawn to shock herself awake before long days at The Church Studios. That rawness carries across the record, which came out on Fiction Records and Wolf Tone in 2021. Before the solo project she played in the shoegaze band Deaf Club, and also provided backing vocals on The Maccabees' final album. Her second album, Soft Landing, arrived in 2023 and is co produced with Riley MacIntyre. Clash describes it as a dreamy production with techno undertones, transcendental vocals and wistful instrumentals. Mackey has cited the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pixies and Warpaint as touchstones, and her time DJing at clubs and festivals fed directly into its sound.
