About
Arve Henriksen has one of the most distinctive sounds in contemporary jazz, playing trumpet in a way that recalls the breathy, flute like tone of the Japanese shakuhachi. That quality sets him apart from virtually every other trumpeter working today, and it has made him a natural fit for the atmospheric, spacious recordings associated with labels like ECM and Rune Grammofon. Born in Stranda, Norway, he has built a catalog that runs well over a hundred albums, spanning solo work and collaborations with artists as varied as David Sylvian, Supersilent, and Trio Mediæval. His voice is another instrument entirely. On his album Chiaroscuro, his wordless, soprano range vocals blur the line between trumpet and human breath so completely that on certain tracks he can genuinely be mistaken for a female singer. As a core member of Supersilent, one of Norway's most celebrated improvisational groups, he has pushed that restless, uncategorizable sound across nine albums. Recent solo work includes a 2024 ECM release, Touch of Time, recorded with pianist Harmen Fraanje.
