As I Lay Dying built their reputation as one of metalcore's most relentless outfits out of San Diego, blending melodic death metal riffing with crushing breakdowns and the unmistakable roar of Tim Lambesis. Their fourth album, An Ocean Between Us, cracked the Billboard 200 top ten and hit number one on the Top Rock chart, and the song "Nothing Left" earned a Grammy nomination. Shadows Are Security before it was already being called one of the strongest releases of 2005, with guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa driving a melodic ferocity that set the band apart in a crowded scene. The band's story took a dramatic turn in 2014 when Lambesis was convicted of soliciting the murder of his estranged wife and sentenced to six years in prison, sending the remaining members into a new project called Wovenwar. The reunion in 2018 came with the single "My Own Grave" and the full album Shaped by Fire in 2019, though subsequent years saw significant lineup upheaval. By 2024, Lambesis was the sole remaining original member, and the band still pushed out their eighth studio album, Through Storms Ahead, in November of that year.
