Ashanti has a knack for softening hard edges. When she burst onto the scene in 2002 through Murder Inc. label boss Irv Gotti, she carved out a signature sound that wrapped R&B warmth around hip hop grooves. Her voice showed up on some of the era's biggest tracks, dueting with Ja Rule on "Always on Time" and Fat Joe on "What's Luv?", and her presence gave those records something neither artist could quite pull off alone. She became a genuine sensation in the US practically overnight. Beyond music, she has kept herself busy across different fields, landing roles in films like Resident Evil: Extinction and John Tucker Must Die, and even launching her own fragrance, Precious Jewel by Ashanti, back in 2005. More recently she has been collaborating with artists like Joyner Lucas and Afro B, keeping her sound fresh while staying true to the soulful, hip hop inflected R&B that made her a household name.
