About
Also known as: ASKO/Schönberg Ensemble, Compositieproject van Asko|Schönberg
When the Asko Ensemble and the Schönberg Ensemble joined forces in 2008, two of the Netherlands' most important new music groups became one. The Asko Ensemble had been running since 1965, premiering works by Ligeti, Stockhausen, Elliott Carter and Brian Ferneyhough and racking up nearly a hundred recordings along the way. The Schönberg Ensemble, founded in 1974 by conservatory graduates in The Hague, started with the Second Viennese School and kept expanding outward until it was covering the full sweep of twentieth and twenty first century repertoire. Together as Asko Schönberg, with Reinbert de Leeuw at the helm, the ensemble pushed further into interdisciplinary territory, working with living composers and music theatre makers and experimenting with immersive staging and scenography. Their home base is the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam, though they have toured across Europe and beyond.
