Formed in Borlänge, Sweden, in 2002, Astral Doors built their identity around a sound rooted in Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, with vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson delivering a Dio esque style that became the band's most recognizable trait. Their debut album Of the Son and the Father landed at number 5 in the German metal magazine Rock Hard, a strong start that set the tone for a prolific run of releases. The band even opened for Blind Guardian on their 2006 tour. Over a string of albums they balanced aggression with ambition, tackling subjects like the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Astralism and shifting toward power metal territory on New Revelation. With ten studio albums now under their belt, the most recent being Worship or Die from 2019, Astral Doors have carved out a steady place in the European heavy metal scene without ever straying too far from their classic metal roots.
