The Athens State Orchestra holds the distinction of being the oldest symphony orchestra in Greece. Based in Athens, the ensemble performs under the baton of chief conductor Lukas Karytinos and has built a repertoire that ranges widely across the classical and symphonic canon. A programme the orchestra has presented includes Skalkottas's colourful Greek Dances alongside Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony, a pairing that shows its willingness to set vivid national character against more austere twentieth century work. The orchestra has also performed alongside international soloists, with Beethoven's Violin Concerto and the First Cello Concerto by Saint Saëns featuring in its concerts.
