About
AVROTROS brings together the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Groot Omroepkoor for performances of major choral and orchestral repertoire. One centrepiece of their programming is Mozart's Missa in C major, better known as the Krönungsmesse. Mozart composed the work at 23, under commission from the Archbishop of Salzburg, who reportedly wanted something grand but concise for Easter Sunday. The result balances scale with restraint, featuring solo voices, choir and brass fanfares that give the finale an almost operatic sweep. The soprano melody from the Agnus Dei later resurfaced in Mozart's opera La Clemenza di Tito. The nickname Krönungsmesse came later, after the mass was performed at the coronations of Leopold II of Bohemia and Franz II, who became Emperor Franz I of Austria.
