About

Also known as: Aya Coco Danioko

Few artists have climbed as fast or as far as Aya Nakamura. Born in Bamako and raised in the Paris suburbs, she built her fanbase from scratch by posting songs online, and by 2018 her Afrobeats tinged R&B track "Djadja" had hit number one in both France and the Netherlands, making her the first French female artist to top the Dutch charts since Édith Piaf back in 1961. Her second album, Nakamura, went diamond in France and crossed 1.2 million copies sold worldwide, cementing a sound that blends Afrobeats, alternative R&B, and francophone pop in a way that clearly travels. The momentum only grew from there. Follow up single "Copines" also went diamond, "Pookie" became the most watched French music video of 2019, and Nakamura eventually became the most streamed francophone woman on Spotify after surpassing a billion streams. Her third album, Aya, won her a Victoires de la Musique award. In early 2025, the "Djadja" video crossed a billion YouTube views, making her the first African musician ever to hit that milestone.
