Mike Golding and Steve Rutter bonded over a shared obsession with Detroit techno in the late 1980s, and that love of artists like Juan Atkins and Derrick May shaped everything B12 went on to do. They launched their own imprint, B12 Records, in 1991, pressing limited runs on coloured vinyl with cryptic hand etched messages in the run out grooves, and kept a deliberate distance from the press, which only deepened the intrigue around them. Themes of science fiction and futurism run through virtually all of their output. Their 1993 debut Electro Soma on Warp Records put them at the heart of the early ambient techno and IDM scene, appearing on the same label compilations as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and The Black Dog. Their second album Time Tourist followed in 1996, with artwork by The Designers Republic. After a long absence following the 1998 EP 3EP, they returned in 2005, remastered their back catalogue, and released their third album Last Days of Silence in 2008. Electro Soma was reissued in 2017 alongside a companion compilation.
