Babes Wodumo, born Bongekile Simelane in Lamontville, Durban, is one of the artists most credited with pushing gqom from a South African underground sound into something the world started paying attention to. Her 2016 debut album Gqom Queen Vol. 1 opened with the smash single "Wololo" featuring Mampintsha, racked up over 28 million streams, debuted at number 3 on the South African iTunes charts, and went platinum. The album earned her nominations at both the MTV Africa Music Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best African Act. She also landed a spot on Kendrick Lamar's Black Panther: The Album on a track called "Redemption", putting her gqom sound in front of a global audience. Her second album, Idando Kazi, arrived in 2020 and picked up right where the first left off, with lead single "eLamont" again hitting number 3 on the iTunes charts. In 2021 she and her late husband Mampintsha starred in the Showmax reality show Uthando Lodumo.
