About
Rome's Banda Bassotti have been flying the flag for politically charged ska punk since 1987, drawing inspiration from The Clash and The Specials. Their songs dig into communist and far left themes, with a particular focus on the politics of Ireland and Latin America, and the band backed up their convictions by showing up at protests and aligning themselves with anti fascist movements in Italy from the very start. Even their name carries attitude, lifted from the Italian version of the Disney Beagle Boys. After a split in 1996 they came back together in 2001, adding trombone and trumpet to what had been a strictly guitar driven sound. That reunion eventually led to a promotional run where they closed out the Fuji Rock Festival alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They kept releasing records well into the 2010s, racking up an impressive catalogue that includes albums recorded in the Basque Country with local musicians and a collection of political songs drawn from around the world.
