Banda do Mar is a Rio de Janeiro trio built around one of Brazilian music's most compelling creative partnerships: Marcelo Camelo and Mallu Magalhães, who are also a couple in real life. Rounding out the group is drummer Fred Ferreira. Their self titled debut came out in August 2014, and the name says it all in a way, "Band of the Sea" in Portuguese, a fitting image for music that draws on bossa nova, MPB and samba. Camelo and Magalhães had already been weaving their talents together well before the band formed. When Mallu sang "Janta" on Marcelo's solo debut Sou, Rolling Stone Brasil picked it as the best Brazilian track of the year. Camelo later produced Mallu's third album Pitanga in 2011. After touring behind their debut record, the band announced a hiatus in August 2015, with their final show taking place in Lisbon the following month.
