About
Also known as: Barrington Ainsworth Levy
Barrington Levy is one of reggae and dancehall's most enduring voices, a Jamaican artist from Clarendon whose run of hits in the early 1980s helped define the sound of the era. Working with the Roots Radics and producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, he put out a string of stone cold classics including "Englishman", "Skylarking" and "Shine Eye Girl" before he was even a teenager. His crossover moment came with "Here I Come", which cracked the UK Singles Chart in 1985 and kept finding new audiences, charting again in 2001. Levy has never really stopped moving. His 1998 album Living Dangerously brought him US attention via collaborations with Bounty Killer and Snoop Dogg, and his acoustic record Acousticalevy earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2016. In 2021 he appeared on the Gorillaz track "Meanwhile", and Rolling Stone placed him at number 119 on their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2023. Few artists from that first wave of dancehall are still operating at this level.
