About
Also known as: Joshua Mainnie, Joshua Spence Mainnie
Barry Can't Swim, the project of Edinburgh born producer and DJ Joshua Spence Mainnie, makes electronic music that sits at the intersection of dance, jazz and something harder to pin down. He identifies more as a musician than a producer, and that instinct shows: his debut album When Will We Land?, released in 2023 via Ninja Tune, charted at number 12 in the UK and was called a "tour de force" by PopMatters, who ranked it the best electronic album of that year. Billboard, Mixmag, Clash and DJ Mag all put it in their year end lists, and it went on to be shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize. His second album Loner arrived in July 2025, also on Ninja Tune, and picked up a Metacritic score of 84, indicating universal acclaim. Singles like Still Riding and Kimpton, featuring O'Flynn, gave a sense of where Mainnie had taken his sound: personal, eclectic, and full of what The Times described as his "way of injecting character and fun into the frequently serious world of electronic music". He headlined London's All Points East festival that same summer.
