About
Also known as: Phylips, Phylyps
Basic Channel is the Berlin duo of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, and their first run of records pretty much wrote the blueprint for dub techno. Between 1993 and 1994 they put out nine 12 inch singles under various aliases, with barely any information on the sleeves and cryptic lettering that kept the whole thing mysterious. The sound was stripped back and minimal, soaked in delay effects borrowed from dub reggae, and it spawned a legion of imitators. The pair built a small universe around it. There is the Chain Reaction and Main Street imprints, the Maurizio releases, and Rhythm & Sound, where they took a more faithful approach to Jamaican dub and worked with vocalists like Paul St. Hilaire, Cornell Campbell and the Love Joys. Their 1990s output is still treated as pioneering for both minimal and dub techno. If you want the essentials in one place, the BCD compilation from 1995 collects edits of those early 12 inches, with BCD 2 following in 2008.
